FB&D
has been in the industrial power business for over 100 years. Today, we continue to offer
design and construction of industrial power plants and cogeneration facilities. The power
engineering staff includes several graduate, registered professional engineers, who, prior
to joining FB&D, have functioned as power plant superintendents, technical assistants
in power plant operations, construction field engineers, corporate central design
engineers, and plant checkout and start-up engineers -- all in the industrial
Power/Cogeneration field. Additionally, some staff are AEE certified for "CCP"
or "CEM" status.
Industrial Power Plants
Our professional staff realizes that industrial power plants
differ in many ways from electric utility plants. Industries generally have in their power
plants all of the elements which make up a utility plant, plus many other processes with
their associated problems and demands. Some of the basic and important differences are:
- Fluctuating process steam demands at different pressure levels
must be satisfied simultaneously with varying plant electrical loads.
- Combustion of process waste in liquid, gas, or solid form (or
any combination of the three) along with the combustion of one or more purchased fossil
fuels.
- Process waste handling and treatment.
- Process water treatment and distribution, in addition to
boiler feedwater treatment, frequently is a part of the industrial power plant operation.
- Handling and treatment of process condensate returns.
- Makeup of large quantities of demineralized water due to
losses of condensate to process.
- Production and distribution of large quantities of compressed
air to process areas.
For almost all industrial power projects, the design of the
combustion and ash handling systems plays a major role in the successful operation of the
facility. FB&D recognizes this important consideration and incorporates special design
considerations into each project that it undertakes.
In spite of the greater complexities and wider range of problems associated with the
operation of industrial power plants, economic factors do not permit the expenditure of
capital for backup and standby equipment to the extent enjoyed by electric utilities.
The entire approach to designing industrial power plants is unique and FB&D has the
qualifications and experience to successfully complete these projects.
Cogeneration Facility Design
As a direct result of 100 years of designing power generation
and electrical systems, FB&D has developed the necessary skills to design, develop and
build cogeneration projects in a cost-effective, timely manner. The cost pressures and
profitability requirements of our industrial clients have enabled us to focus on value
engineering on each of our systems. FB&D has the experience to develop
cogeneration projects from initial feasibility assessment through to facility
installation, testing and owner acceptance.
FB&D's experience with process plant design is advantageous in identifying hidden
cogeneration and heat recovery opportunities (e.g., shaving peak cyclical steam or
electrical demands by process modification; replacement of process chiller systems with
absorption units; evaluation of vapor recovery, exhaust and waste gas streams for heat
recovery).
